Foreign media news on February 26: The White House of the United States said on Friday that the United States will impose a 200% tariff on aluminum metal and its derivatives produced in Russia from March 10, which is effectively equivalent to banning the import of Russian aluminum.
The US will also impose a 200% tariff on imports of primary aluminum produced in Russia from April 10.
"By imposing these tariffs, we will deny Russia access to this important U.S. aluminum market," the U.S. Department of Commerce said.
Rusal, produced by Rusal, accounts for about 6 percent of global supply.
The tariffs, however, are unlikely to significantly strain the U.S. aluminum market, as the U.S. imports only a small portion of its aluminum from Russia. U.S. imports of unwrought aluminum and alloys from Russia in 2022 will be 191,809 tons, about 4.4% of last year's total of more than 4.4 million tons, compared with 8.9% in 2018 and 14.6% in 2017.
