Jamaica's economic output grew by about 2.7% in the first quarter of 2023. According to Wayne Henry, director general of the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), this was the eighth consecutive quarter of growth.
Thanks in large part to the continued economic recovery of Jamaica's main trading partners. In the first quarter of 2023, the Jamalco alumina refinery in Clarendon was restarted in the third quarter of 2022 after being shut down in August 2021 due to a fire.
Output in Jamaica's 'mining and quarrying' sector grew by about 95.9% in the first quarter, led by a sharp increase in alumina production, which offset a contraction in bauxite output. Alumina output rose 197.1 percent, helped by the resumption of production at the Jamalco alumina plant, but bauxite output fell 33.2 percent due to slumping demand.
